Carrots are one of the UK’s most popular root vegetables, grown mainly in East Anglia, Nottinghamshire, and Scotland. They are bulky, relatively low density, and usually harvested and stored in autumn. Unlike cereals or aggregates, carrots are perishable and require careful handling to avoid damage and maintain food quality standards. On UK roads, carrots are normally hauled in tipping trailers or moving floor trailers, depending on whether the load is going direct from field to factory, or from stores to processing sites.
According to British Carrots, around 700,000 tonnes of carrots are produced annually in the UK. About 90% of UK consumption comes from domestic growers. Carrots are made up of about 88% water, with the remainder being sugars, fibre, and vitamins. This means they are susceptible to freezing in cold weather and bruising if loads are not tipped safely.

Carrots are lifted in autumn and can be stored in large field clamps covered with straw for gradual use throughout the year. Most carrots are washed, graded, and packed before being sent to supermarkets. Transport can involve moving bulk carrots from field clamps to packing houses, or sending processed and bagged carrots onwards to retail distribution centres. Trailers need to handle the product carefully to avoid bruising, while still operating efficiently at bulk tonnages.
Increasingly, growers and hauliers are looking to reduce waste and damage in transport. Moving floor trailers are being trialled for carrots in Europe due to their lower risk of tip-overs and gentler unloading. As food safety standards tighten, the demand for TASCC-compliant bulk trailers with automatic covers and doors is growing. Hauliers carrying carrots often combine them with other root vegetable return loads such as parsnips and potatoes, maximising efficiency.
There are around 500 carrot growers in the UK, with the majority concentrated in Nottinghamshire and East Anglia. More information and grower support can be found at British Carrots.
