There are two very different poppy seed stories in the UK. The first is pharmaceutical. The opium poppy (Papaver somniferum - not the red field poppy of Remembrance) has been grown commercially on British farms since 2002 under a Home Office licence, for medical morphine. Today around 2,500 hectares bloom lilac each summer, mostly in Dorset, Hampshire, Lincolnshire and Oxfordshire, as a spring-sown break crop before cereals or oilseed rape.
